Families in Action
Families in action is a non-profit, non governmental organization dedicated to the upliftment and healing of families and individuals ravaged by drug addiction and social abuses through counselling and group support.
Through its mission statement formulated in 1988, the organization seeks ‘to promote healthy family life; balancing emotional, spiritual and physical needs. We are moved to regenerate both the family unit and any individual of that unit experiencing pain, difficulty or isolation’.
It is open to persons of all religious denominations and to those who profess no particular faith, requiring only a commitment to the improvement of self and community.
Families in Action is incorporated under the companies Ordinance,Chapter 31, No1, as a company limited by guarantee, not having a share Capital.
Some of our services include:
A drop in counselling service where personal problems can be solved in a caring , informal yet confidential and professional environment.
Outreach education to schools, community groups, agencies.
Short-term assessment and referral centre to professionals, organizations, agencies throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
Training Programmes
Group Support for recovering addicts and families which bring to the fore , issues with which the Victims (both addicts and families) have to grapple and which will ultimately empower them to take responsibility for their lives
Vacation camps for youth
Peer Counselling
A twenty four hour, seven days a week Hotline for persons in acute distress
Parenting Programmes.
The majority of clients, including substance abusers, street children, battered women, etc who seek the assistance/support of Families in Action are unable to look after themselves and as a consequence, unable to make any financial contribution for the services rendered. All costs incurred and associated with the services provided are borne by the organization.
The mandate by the community to provide such a cadre of services places this organization in a serious dilemma, since our commitment to serve must still be pursued, using all the professional and para-professional support at our disposal.
Families in Action remains committed however, to doing its part to assist in alleviating the devastating effects of the negative pressure being experienced by some of our citizenry.
